A love letter to Colorado, to Westcliffe, and to the community that helped bring this remarkable place back to life.
An unexpected detour.
In 2021, Dan was training to climb all 58 of Colorado's 14,000-foot mountains in record time when an injured foot brought him down from Crestone Peak and into Westcliffe to recover for a few days.
What began as an unexpected place to recover quickly became something more. Surrounded by the sweeping ridgeline of the Sangre de Cristos, Dan fell in love with the valley's quiet grandeur, its clear night skies, and the warmth of the people who called it home.
Sometimes the most important places in our lives are not the ones we set out to find. They are the ones that find us.
The following year, Dan returned to the summits and set the self-supported Colorado 14er record — climbing all 58 mountains over 14,000 ft. in 14 days, 17 hours, and 33 minutes. A record that still stands today.
Yet the journey gave him something more enduring.
It led him back to Westcliffe.
A dignified building, patiently waiting.
In 2024, both Kelsey and Dan visited Westcliffe and eventually purchased a home and land in the valley. And in the process, we discovered the historic Wolff Building.
We were immediately captivated by its architecture, its character, and the nearly 140 years of history held within its walls. Time had weathered the building, but it had not diminished its presence. It felt dignified and romantic — as though it had been patiently waiting for its next chapter.
We fell in love with it immediately.
When we finally chose to take on the restoration, we inherited the work of two previous owners who had spent nearly four decades patiently preserving the building. Our responsibility was to honor what they had begun — and carry it across the finish line.
Over the next year and a half, the Wolff became the center of our lives. We worked on it day and night, pouring our energy, creativity, and hearts into every room.
Luxurious, never generic. Historic, never frozen.
Alongside talented craftspeople and cherished members of the Westcliffe community, we preserved original details, rebuilt what time had taken away, and introduced modern comforts without erasing the building's soul.
Every finish, furnishing, fixture, and fabric was chosen with intention. The goal was not to make the building appear new, but to allow its age, beauty, and imperfections to become part of the experience.
The restoration brought together a lifetime of shared passions — including Dan's earlier restoration of the 16,000-square-foot George R. Newell Mansion, known as Château LaSalle, in Minneapolis. Yet transforming the Wolff into The Wildflower felt different. It became the culmination of everything we loved: architecture and history, design and hospitality, mountains and perseverance.
Why The Wildflower?
We chose the name The Wildflower because it reflects both the beauty of this valley and the spirit of love found in the mountains. Wildflowers are delicate yet resilient. They emerge in unexpected places, bring restorative healing to their surroundings, flourish in difficult terrain, and bring extraordinary beauty for those who notice the little things.
After decades of patient restoration, the Wolff has blossomed once again.

Each of our six guest rooms are individually designed and named for a 14,000-foot mountain in the Sangre de Cristo Range. No two rooms are alike. Each has its own atmosphere, details, and character — just as every mountain possesses a spirit entirely its own.
The Wildflower is our love letter to Colorado and to Westcliffe, the community that helped bring this remarkable space back to life.
It was born from an unexpected detour in the mountains and became the place where our passions, our story, and our sense of home came together.
